Make Me A Million Update (Part 4)

In Part 3 I brought you up-to-date briefly on the first 9 months of the entrpreneurs journey. This update will be the last one as the competition is now over... Couple #1: "Freshbed" - managed to turn around the personal problems and start concentrating once again on business matters. Managed to get the bed manufacturers to produce more beds to go into shops around the country for customer to try out before buying. Secured a deal with a company that supplies beds to chains of hotels - which is a big sea-change in the way Freshbed does business. Rather than concentrate on on end user sales, concentrate on B2B sales and let them deal with the end user...one member of the team quit in order to get his personal life back on track - good luck to Fergus. Couple #2: The LEAN Team - launched the website 12 days before the end of the competition and managed to get around 1100 paying subscribers to the service, 700 of which came from one corporate client. Again, rather than concentrate the sales focus on the end user, they concentrated on the one corporate client. Couple #3: Halos n Horns - signed up many more chains of supermarkets to stick their goods. Rather than sell to end customers, these guys concentrated on selling to big businesses who would then sell on to their customers. The Decision: I was incredibly disappointed that Halo n Horns won the whole competition, as the mentor did most of the work and seemed to be using the programme as a vehicle for his own propoganda. Of course this may be the way that the show was edited, but I can only comment on what I see, and what I saw was 2 teams working hard who came up with their own plans and ideas and 1 who relied on her mentor way too much. I'd have thought that the judges would have seen through this, I believe that Goldsmith (one of the judges) did mention about Ivan Massow' (over) involvement, but that was immediately glossed over. Burts thoughts: We can clearly see that the way to success is not to sell to the individual end client. It's better to concentrate on 1 "big" client who will then expend their time , energy and money to sell onto their own clients. A very good series. Interesting to see the different roles taken up by the Mentors, particularly the difference between the three "business styles".

I have invited both Halos'n'Horns and Freshbed to take part in a 10 questions profile - hopefully they will be able to take a few moments to help us with our budding entrepreneurship, just as Brayley & Todd have.

I forgot to mention a couple of website titbits:

Halos'n'Horns website was built by Ivan Massow. Of the three teams websites it is the most unprofessional; I previously mentioned that it crashed my browser!

LEAN Teams website apparently cost £120,000 - I'm sure that this is not strictly true. I'm guessing the *content* cost many thousands, and the actual site build was considerably less.

Gary, Gary, you (like so many others no doubt) is taking this series much to literally. It will have been devised and set up by the production team and by C4. Do you seriously think that some bod out of nowhere can get a distribution deal with Tescos - just like that?
The pair had no secret formula - they just went to a pharma company and ordered up a kid-friendly formula and a nice bottle. How do you think Tescos do their own brands? Exactly the same way.
Do you think a company like Tescos would permit someone else to do what they can do just as easily? No.
The production team will have contacted Tescos many months in advance and set it all up. Tescos will either have a stake in the company or a limited-time deal. It was great PR for them!!

Exactly. So what was the point of following them for the year? Good programming I guess.
