Google Page Rank (Part 2)

A couple of weeks ago I moaned about PR. Seems like someone at Google listened to me ;) as this blog now has PR4 - I'm still not sure what that means in real terms but anyway... I checked a few of my other sites, and see one new site came in at PR4, with a few other new ones at PR0. It's interesting to note that the PR4 came about because I linked it from a few of my existing sites (all lower than PR4). Thus, there must be some sort of a totting up procedure maintained by Google (eg a number of links from PR2 and PR3 sites add up to a PR4)... I don't know. Can anyone give their views on this phenomonen?

New URL: www.osworld.biz - thanks!

My personal view is that pagerank is retarded.

That is all.

Well I don't think PR plays as big a role in search results as it used to. And we don't have to run around playing guessing games either to see this ;) we can look at 2 simple facts:

First, Stanford University owns the patent on Google's PR, which lasts until 2017. Google has a exclusive license until 2011 with the University to use the technology, but after 2011, it becomes open for others to license it. This is some time off, but does seem to indicate that it is in Google's favor to start relying less on PR as we near 2011.

Secondly, as documented in Google's own patent filing for their search ranking algorithm, well over 60 individual variables are taken into account for the search ranking. Some of these have long been attributed to increasing PR, but several are somewhat surprising and really never before seen. This also indicates that PR is not the factor in search ranking, but merely a factor, out of many factors.

PR is just a green bar on the browser to give site owners something to get wound up over.

It's just a value that means nothing in the clear light of day when it comes to visitors, rankings etc.
